This movie is still geared toward film buffs, but it's very accessible and the enjoyment of My Voyage to Italy does not hinge at all on the viewer's pre-knowledge of Italian cinema. This is unlike any documentary I've seen before.Ī+Catholic+boy+mourns+his+mother. In a way it's not even really a Martin Scorsese film, as much as an anthology hosted by Martin Scorsese. With this film, Scorsese has done a much better job at showing rather than telling, and it's easy to get sucked into the films because bit by bit we're actually watching them.

Thus the film has more the pacing of a series of lectures than a self-contained documentary film.Īren't+you+the+guy+from+that+Will+Smith+fish+cartoon? I was a little let down by his previous documentary, A Personal Journey Through American Movies with Martin Scorsese because that film is drawn in broader strokes and I found it difficult to care about these important films simply because I was told they were important. Much of Scorsese's narration is not describing the overarching cinematic themes, as much as the minutiae of what's happening onscreen.

Over 95 percent of the film is original film footage (with just a few news clipping and shots of the director himself) - gone from this documentary are the expected talking heads and the manufactured montages. Scorsese often allows the films to speak for themselves, and the documentary is punctuated by images, more than decisive narration. My Voyage to Italy is a very slowly paced documentary. It encapsulates the decades in which Scorsese made his transition from observer to creator. The film begins by examining films from the late 1940s, the films of Scorsese's childhood, up through Fellini's work of the 1960s, specifically 8 1/2. But Scorsese does a wonderful job selecting plenty of lesser-known works, too, many of them serialized projects and short pieces.Īs the title suggests, this isn't so much a complete history of Italian cinema, as it is a cinematic autobiography of Scorsese. Many of the films shown here are revered classics of Italian neo-realism, such as The Bicycle Thief and Open City. Scorsese lets scenes play out in their entirety, with half the soundtrack dedicated to the original actors, and half to his narration, speaking both on the importance of each film and also how it fit into his life as a child. Because of the length of the documentary we're allowed to really view long film segments at a time, rather than short clips. Scorsese narrates over four hours his thoughts on the Italian films he grew up on. Beginning with 1974's Italianamerican, Scorsese has documented the fashion industry, the Statue of Liberty, blues music, his Italian heritage and of course, cinema.įilmed in a similar vein to 1995's A Personal Journey Through American Movies with Martin Scorsese, 1999's My Voyage to Italy is in many ways a much more intimate film.

Although he will likely always be better known for him crime epics, Martin Scorsese is also a rather accomplished documentary filmmaker.
